A new platform, an additional lift, escalators, water-vending machines at each platform, better food catering and a new retiring room — the Chandigarh railway station will see a lot of changes in terms of infrastructural development by November.

Divisional railways manger (DRM), Ambala division, Dinesh Kumar, who was in the city on Wednesday, shared the city railway station will also have Wi-Fi connectivity. “The target is to complete the work before the end of June,” he said, adding that by November, the railways also planned to introduce water-vending machines — where one will be able to get 300ml water for just Rs 1.50 — and a new platform number 6, which is under construction.

He added the Dappar-Chandigarh doubling will also be completed by November, after which the Ambala division might get additional trains from Chandigarh. “All the 82 unmanned level-crossings in our division will be eliminated to avoid any untoward accident,” he said. He said after receiving complaints about poor catering services in Shatabdis, the railways had started frequent inspections.

“A budget worth Rs 52 lakh has been sanctioned to install solar power panels on the entire Kalka-Shimla section,” he said.

“Our main focus right now is to construct bio-toilets. Of 450 coaches running in the region, 90 of them have bio-toilets. We are also planning to install a bio-toilet at the Shimla railway station as well, following which the facility will be put up at the Chandigarh station,” he added.

Furthermore, the DRM confirmed the northern railways had received Rs 1,540 crore for the construction of the Chandigarh-Baddi rail line.

The concierge service, currently available across the 22 stations in the country, is now available at the Chandigarh railway station as well.

The tricity passengers can book a cab and porter at their destination station through railways online ‘concierge services’. This facility can be availed as a combo of both cab and porter, or only cab service.

Travellers can also book wheelchair and stretcher for elderly or physically-challenged people.
